What a lovely mothers day present for a lady golfer!
Golf, or to non-golfers "a good walk spoilt" hasn't got a clear history like some other games.
A game played with a stick and a leather ball, that sounds a bit like the golf we recognise today was recorded on 26 February 1297, in Loenen aan de Vecht, a city in Holland.
Prof. Ling Hongling of Lanzhou University suggested that a very similar game has been played in China since the Southern Tang Dynasty, which is 500 years before golf was first mentioned in Scottish records.
A spokesman for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, is quoted as saying "Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries, but golf as we know it today, played over 18 holes, clearly originated in Scotland." Hmm, well I suppose he WOULD say that wouldn't he!
Anyway, the modern game of golf is generally regarded as a Scottish invention, because the game was mentioned in two 15th-century Acts of the Scottish Parliament, forbidding the playing of the game of "gowf" because it was interfering with archery practice.
The modern game of golf started and was developed in Scotland.
The very first written rules were laid down there, as well as the convention of having an 18-hole course.
Once the game had spread from Scotland to England, it was only a matter of time before it spread to the rest of the world.
Trivia players may like to know that the oldest golf course in the world is The Old Links at Musselburgh Racecourse, which dates back to 1672, and apparently Mary, Queen of Scots played there in 1567.
By the way, and it's completely off topic....this page keeps coming up in searches for the Seesaw Animal Rescue at Leavenheath near Colchester. So we just thought we'd add a couple of words on behalf of people like Maggi who runs Seesaw Animal Rescue at Leavenheath in north Essex.
If you are planning a day out anywhere near it, drop in and have a look, and let us know about it.
We have absolutely no connection to Ron and Maggie at S.E.S.A.W., we've never had any contact with them, but since we keep coming up on page 1 for searches for their Rescue Centre, we thought that to give them a mention might help their work in some small way.
Besides, now you know about it, you might get an interesting day out in between rounds of golf.....
