They love visiting fellow evacuee Albert, at the farm of Druid's Bottom, where they meet Hepzibah Green, who knows magical stories, and Johnny Gotobed, who is very slow but speaks his own language.

They meet Mr Evans' other sister, Dilys Gotobed, who married the mine-owner and lived in luxury, until all the money was gone.

Now widowed and dying, she lives with her housekeeper Hepzibah Green.

As a child, Carrie tries to understand the people around her - Albert, her brother Nick, the difficult Mr Evans and the dying Mrs Gotobed.

With the best of intentions, she makes some mistakes, and as you will see when you read this book, it is only when she returns to Druid's Bottom as a grown up that she is able to make sense of her time there as a young evacuee.
